Hydrogen fuel cells represent the ideal power source for materials handling equipment. They can be rapidly refueled by switching the easily removable hydrogen canisters, boosting productivity by eliminating the time and cost associated with conventional battery change-outs and charging. In addition, fuel cells provide consistent power throughout shifts, whilst battery performance often degrades. Performance in low temperatures is consistent and superior to battery powered units.
The U.S. Department of Energy have endorsed the use of fuel cell powered lift trucks to reduce the labor cost of recharging and use less physical space for the activity. This extends to support of the early fuel cell market in MHA (Materials Handling Equipment) through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
