The whole trip was accomplished under the supply model of low-pressure hydrogen canister exchange.
On the weekend of 07-08 November 2009, engineers of APFCT rode a fuel cell-powered scooter, ZES 4.5, for a two-day 400 km road test drive. The drive started from the headquarters of APFCT in Zhu-Nan to Kao-Hsiung and Ping-Tung and is a part of a series of developmental tests. At this time, no hydrogen exchange station has been set up in Taiwan to support the APFCT concept of hydrogen canister exchange for fuel cell-powered transportation. For refueling, the engineers carried hydrogen canisters in a tender vehicle. Anytime when hydrogen canisters on the scooter were depleted, they would be replaced with fully charged hydrogen canisters. The canister exchange took less than 30 seconds and it was done on the roadside without support of any specific facility. The whole trip went very smoothly and they arrived in Kao-Hsiung city centre on time as planned.
Next day, as the weather was very beautiful, they continued riding on South-Loop Highway for data on long grade climbing conditions.
This trip has set the record, both in Taiwan and in the world, of a long-distance road trip by a fuel cell-powered scooter in a single day.
